In-depth interviews: how to ask questions to hear the truth

Why "Would you like…?" is a bad question and what to ask instead.

People readily describe what they would do in the future but are poor at predicting their own behavior. That is why a good interview relies on past experience.

Instead of "Would you use this feature?" ask "Tell me how you solved this problem the last time." A concrete story reveals real motives and barriers.

Avoid leading questions, do not argue and do not explain the product. A pause after an answer often brings the most valuable addition.

An experienced moderator notices contradictions between words and actions — that is where insights are most often found.
